Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument

The Salinas Pueblo Missions is a complex of three Spanish missions located near Mountaineer, NM.. Conquered by the Spanish Conquistador Juan Oñate in the late 1500's, the mission construction began in the early 1600's. Of the three mission Churches: Quivira, Abo, and Gran Quivira, the Gran Quivira once served as the headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition in New Mexico,.


At the height of it's culture, the three Salinas pueblos had a population of over 40,000. Just prior to the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680, the missions were abandoned in the 1670's due to conflicts between the Spanish, Pueblo Indians and warring Apache tribes...
